IELTS, SAT, GMAT – Understanding the Exams you need to clear for admission to Universities in USA, UK, Canada

Every year lakhs of students travel to countries abroad to study. From seeking quality education to a cultural experience and even the prospect of immigration, the motivations for studying abroad are multifaceted. What is IELTS, SAT, TOEFL, GMAT and how important they are for studying abroad?
Before we explain one and all of the examinations required by students, it is important to understand that the requirements vary from country to country and from university to university. In terms of examination, there are essentially two category of examinations – Language Proficiency examinations or IELTS, TOEFL, DSH, etc. and Aptitude Tests like SATs, GMAT, GRE. These examinations are briefly explained below.

Language Proficiency Tests – IELTS, TOEFL, etc.

As the name suggests, the language proficiency tests are examinations a person ought to appear in to show his/her ability to understand a foreign language or the primary language of instruction for education in universities abroad. In effect, a student who wishes to study in a country whose first language is not similar to the country he/she wishes to study in, needs to appear for these examinations to be get admission.
For most of the English speaking countries like USA, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, the requirement hence is of providing ‘proof’ that the student is able to understand and converse in English as a medium of instruction. IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

International English Language Testing System or IELTS is the most famous and widely accepted English language proficiency test. IELTS score is accepted by most of the countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand. It is also accepted by universities in USA and Canada. The students who wish to study abroad in any of these countries have to qualify the examination.
IELTS tests a candidate on his/her English skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. The results are provided in bands of 1 to 9 where Band 9 means expert level and Band 1 is non-speaker. Though the minimum requirement varies, usually universities require a student to have a minimum score of 7 bands in IELTS.
Important to note: IELTS has two variants – IELTS Academic and IELTS General. For visa purposes IELTS General is acceptable. Also, the band required for visa is lesser than for academic purposes. Also, IELTS Academic is also accepted for visa processing. Students are hence required to appear for IELTS Academic and achieve the band required by the University. In case it is not specified, then candidates ought to achieve the band required as per the immigration guidelines for student visa requirements.
